Do you think depression can be caused by being in an abusive relationship? In my experience abuse can harm you physically and emotionally as well as leave you feeling isolated and lonely. If it continues it can lead to a nervous breakdown and then recurring depression.

Oh....and my depression comes from a "thorn in the flesh"....as Paul had. But you know something...the word "thorn" is not an accurate translation. The word means a broken-off small branch of a tree..like a sapling. And when it broke off, it became sharp at one end. Paul's "thorn in the flesh" was no thorn...it was a virtual impalement. It was like walking around with a small branch having been thrust into you side. That is how painful it was. And I believe that Paul's "thorn"...impalement...was also depression.

The Bible tell us that in this life we will suffer. The Bible tell us that God wants us to be weak.....so that He will be strong in us. My final scripture (there are many others) is one of my favourites and is on my own profile page. I actually prayed some years ago that I be wek...for this very purpose

2 Corinthians 12
But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

This is how I live. But I appreciate the encouragement of others. We are to encourage each other , because if we have TRULY given our lives to Christ, we will ALL suffer.

Romans 5:4-5
"....we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. "

2 Corinthians 1:5
For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives<</b>/u>, so also through Christ our comfort overflows

2 Corinthians 1:8-11
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.
On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

This again is Paul...it sounds as if he too was suffering from depression.

"When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; "

King David...he too suffered from depression

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted

That's Jesus Christ....a man of sorrows

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. "Where have you laid him?" he asked.
"Come and see, Lord," they replied.
Jesus wept

An example of Jesus' sorrow

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

That's Paul. That's also my own experience

Hi BJC ...I don't know your real name. Well, thank you very much for you message, and I really appreciate your concern. I think you are a very caring person
But....I cannot agree with your friend's conclusions. He writes "When we feel sad or depressed or lonely, that is a warning sign to us that something is VERY VERY WRONG with our relationship with JESUS" Do you realise that he is preaching the "Health and Wealth" gospel?

Let me show you his error

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived. Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it. Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months. Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein. Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning. Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day: Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes. Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the womb?

Are they the words of someone in deep depression? Yes.....they are the words of Job. A man who God had a wonderful relationship with, a righteouss man

Baptised means "immersed". When you were baptised with the holy spirit, you were baptised IN Christ....immersed In Christ in fact. That's why you are now IN Christ. Whatever is true of Christ, is now true of you.

Galatians 3:27-28
for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.....you are all one in Christ Jesus

Colossians 1:27
".........Christ IN YOU, the hope of glory"
That does of course refer to His glory...not yours

CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE
The story is told of a heavyset woman who went to an excercise and diet clinic. The first thing the supervisor did was a silhourtte on a mirror in the shape she wish to become. As she stood before the mirror, she bulged out over the silhouertte. The instructor told her,''Our goal is for you to fit this shape.''
For many weeks the woman dieted and excercised. Each week she would stand in front of the mirror, but her volume, while decreasing, still overflowed. And so she exercised harder and dieted more rigidly. Finally one day, to everyone's delight,as she stood in front of the mirror she was conformed to the image of silhouertte.
It takes time and work to be conformed to the image of God's Son. The discipline of sorrow and suffering, the exercise of pain and trials conform us to His image.

Jesus, My Substitute

If He bore my sins, I do not need to bear them; If He bore my sin nature, I do not need to bear it; If He bore my infirmities, I do not need to carry them;-- If I DO bear them, then He died for naught.
So when I accepted Him as my Saviour, confessed Him as my Lord, and was baptized into His name, I was baptized into His name, I was baptized into His standing before the Father.
I was baptized into His righteousness that He wrought; I was baptized into His justification ; baptized into His health for the body, soul and spirit ; I was baptized into the victory that He had won over Satan ; I was baptized into all He means to the Father, and He died representatively for me.
As He representative up there, now, I am His representative here in the earth.
He has put me, and mine, and all the sin, that was in me, away, and He has given me all that was His ; all that He did, all that He was, so that "as He is now, so am I in this world."

Special Grace And Reserve Grace

Question:What is the cause of poverty in the life of a Christian? How can a Christian have a reserve before God?

Answer:In Revelation 3 the Lord said, "You are...poor" (v. 17). These words were addressed by Him to the church in Laodicea. This poverty implies that
nothing had been laid up in store. It implies not merely a momentary
lack but a continuous lack.

PAUL HIMSELF

PAUL HIMSELF

The message Paul preached was the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. The message he preached was not in vain because he was a living channel of life. He begat many people through the gospel of the cross. What he preached was the word of the cross. Concerning himself, he said that he was "in weakness and in fear and in much trembling." He was a crucified man! Only a crucified man can preach the crucified word. He had no confidence in himself. He did not rely on himself. Weakness, fear,… Continue

THE MESSAGE OF PAUL PREACHED

THE MESSAGE PAUL PREACHED

The message Paul preached was the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The subject of his preaching was the cross of Christ and the crucified Christ. He did not know anything except this. If we forget the cross and do not make the cross and Christ our unique subject, how much will we and our audience miss! I believe that we are surely not those who do not preach the cross.

Our message and our subject may be good. However, do we not have the experience of having a good… Continue

DEEP CALLS UNTO DEEP

DEEP CALLS UNTO DEEP
Scripture Reading: Psa. 42:7; Mark 4:5-6; Isa. 39:1-6; 2 Cor. 12:1-4; Acts 5:1-5

Psalm 42:7 says, "Deep calls unto deep." Only a call from the depths can provoke a response from the depths. Nothing shallow can ever touch the depths, nor can anything superficial touch the inward parts. Only the deep will respond to the deep. Anything that does not issue from the depths cannot touch the depths. Others can respond deep within to only what issues from deep within us. When we go… Continue
